The announcement that Google is coming to Ann Arbor with a cast of 1000 was generally greeted with joy. Google is famous for its creative use of newly developed internet technology and could fit well with our longstanding goal of being the “Research Center of the Midwest”. It would be great to get a substantial laboratory of digital development. However, the details of the proposal raise some questions. Will the Google operation here be merely a large office for people who sell internet advertising? If so, what will be the impact on the community? Another thousand jobs means a lot more kids to be educated and a lot more strain on our streets, housing, water and sewer supplies, parking facilities, etc. Is there really an upside? One might think that a company hoping to attract researchers would be very interested in the quality and quantity of physical, educational and cultural facilities and would recognize that tax breaks are counterproductive.
Maybe we should let Google know that we are happy to have them in the area, but that York, Saline, or Sylvan township would be close enough and would avoid too much togetherness.
